The Clock

Time has gone by and I have not managed to write about this amazing film by Christian Marclay at the White Cube gallery.

‘The Clock’ is constructed out of moments in cinema when time is expressed or when a character interacts with a clock, watch or just a particular time of day. He has taken thousands of these fragments and edited them so they flow in real time.

Women Without Men

Yesterday just saw this very beautiful movie by Iranian visual artist, Shirin Neshat with my friend Sue. I came out of the Renoir Cinema, very overwhelmed. This courageous, intelligent and sensitive film is a true gem! Not only gorgeously shot, it is profound and it touches your soul!

I often find all these beautifully shot films to be empty, unnecessary and irritating. Form just often seems to take over content with these films.

“Women without men” chronicles the stories of five women during 1953, when a British and American backed up coup removed the democratically elected government in Iran. With a camera that floats effortlessly through the lives of these women and the gorgeous countryside of Iran, Shirin Neshat explores the social, political and psychological dimensions of her characters as they meet in a metaphorical garden, where they can exist and reflect, while the complex intellectual and religious forces shaping their world linger in the air around them.

Zebriskie Point

Just watched Zabriskie Point, a provocative document of the political injustice, civil warfare and extreme moral and cultural polarities defining the end of the sixties.
