Interview with Kristin
As a teenager Kristin Smith was already styling her friends and dreamt of making it her profession. She made her aspiration come true and co-founded the Dallas personal styling agency The Clad Life. We love Kristin’s innate sense of style – confident, fresh and seemingly effortless. For this curation, Kristin transports us to the beautiful island of Lago Di Como in Italy to present an edit that will make summer last.
Tell us about a woman who you find beautiful and inspiring? Confidence, confidence, confidence! So many other admirable characteristics stem from confidence; independence, success, happiness and, strength. I truly believe confidence is the root of those. In a society where women are still treated unequal and have to work harder, I admire and am inspired by women who are confident in their own skin and find this incredibly beautiful.
Which accessory do you like to wear to complete your silhouette? Can hair be accessory? I think so. I change my hair constantly, sometimes daily. I think people discount the importance of a strong hair look. It can really transform your overall appearance. Second to that are sunglasses. I love the way a good pair can take a look to the next level. I typically don’t wear a lot of makeup so sunglasses are my go to.
What do you collect? Experiences. I am not attached to material things. My passion and work are clothing and I do enjoy that however, my greatest joy are experiences with people I love. Whether it’s a trip or a memorable dinner or even experiencing someone who is impactful and special these are the moments I collect. I’ve also learned to appreciate the bad experiences Without them I wouldn’t know the good ones.
What object do you cherish most? A cocktail ring that belonged to my grandmother. I can remember her always wearing the ring. Some of my fondest memories are of her so that ring reminds me of her and all of the moments we shared.
If you were a colour, what colour would you be? Blue. For one, I think blue compliments me well but mostly because it is the colour of my favourite place, the ocean.
What’s your favourite smell? I don’t wear perfumes; maybe one day I’ll find a favourite scent. There are a couple of smells I love, my son (after he showered), crisp Fall air, and the ocean breeze in the Caribbean.
What’s your favourite dish? This is hard because I am a food lover! There isn’t much I don’t like. Sushi is probably my favourite and my spot is Oishi in Dallas, Texas. I really love their Tribeca roll with salmon and truffle roll.
Recommend us a book that changed your life? The bible.
Recommend us a film that has stayed with you? I hardly watch TV or movies. When I do watch it’s typically documentaries. I love mostly fashion documentaries. My favourites are “Dior and I” and “Jeremy Scott, the Peoples Designer”. I’ve watched “Dior and I” five times and I always cry. It’s inspiring to watch Raf Simons and his passion for his art. It also connect with Jeremy Scott, being from a small town and paving my way and making opportunities for myself.
What piece of music defines you? I can’t pick one song or genre. My music tastes are so specific to moments, feelings, and life stages.
Tell us about the most amazing place you have travelled to? Travel is very important to me. It has inspired so many things in my life. My favorite place in the world are the Exhuma Islands in the Bahamas. My cousin, who I am very close to, is Bahamian so I spent time there growing up and now as an adult. Beyond sentimental reasons, the Exhumas are amazing for their abundance of beauty and tranquility. I feel at peace on a boat in the middle of this magical place. Some of my greatest memories are there.
